When you lay down at the end of the day – when all the work is done, when the kids are grown up and on their own, when the world is ok and no one needs you to fix problems or find solutions, when all the hungry are fed and needy taken care of, when Sunday comes and you sit in your favorite spot and just exist – who are you?
Who are you underneath the roles you play, without your possessions and achievements?
Who are you beyond your personality?
What answer comes up when you reflect on this question and dig deep?
I have always been fascinated with this – even when I was very little. I’d close my eyes and try to ‘see myself.’ Maybe that’s why I didn’t stay a ‘pop star’ for too long – because I realized the ‘who I was to millions of people’ wasn’t the entire me.
I was too young to know how to let my ‘true self’ show up or what it all meant.
Maybe my curiosity about who we truly are is what has made my spiritual journey so intense… always trying to remove the parts of me that were preventing me from experiencing God’s grace and love, and reconnecting with the part of me that was already, deeply, and completely loved by God. Maybe.
I am still fascinated by that question… and the more I learn (or rediscover, or remember) the more it fascinates me. 🙂
This past year taught me about who I am when I’m not performing and touring. It taught me how I am, what I miss and why, what other ways I can find to fill my soul’s desire (that music fulfills) to connect with others and offer healing, joy, and inspiration.
Even though I LOVE what I do, it doesn’t make me who I am. I learned that I can be happy, at peace, and have a sense of purpose even without performing.
I’ve noticed a lot of people are experiencing this in some way. This past year, the pandemic has forced many of us to change our routines – how we work, what we do.
And usually, in those transitions, we can feel a little lost and try to find our way back to who we are.
That is, if we know who we are…

Let’s be honest, most of us find ourselves one day with that question, not remembering the last time we asked it. We were busy raising children, nurturing our relationships, taking care of others, working to pay the bills, and managing our households.
Take some time this week and reflect on it.
Spring is a great time to do this. And just a week before Easter. New beginnings…new life.
I have two songs that I wrote with the theme of ‘losing myself’.

Music
Sunny Day – This song talks about taking a trip alone in order to get some space in which to reconnect with yourself.
“It’s been a long long trip from the place where dreams were real.
Or did I take a wrong turn and lost myself
In this busy world, forgetting life could be so good?”

Hold My Hand – Sometimes we need someone to guide us back to ‘ourselves.’
“I thought it would be really nice, if I asked you to hold my hand,
Together we could find the story where last I saw myself.”

By the way, I wrote this song many years ago, as a theme song for a movie a good friend was trying to produce. I thought of it because the theme of it is ‘I lost myself.’ 🙂
