I was placing tiny seeds into the small recycled containers filled with good, fresh soil, imagining what they will look like in the summer: growing into big, lush plants that will hold ripe fruit which will nourish my body. I marvel at the miracle of growth every year. It never gets old.
Each time, I pause and think about how amazing it is that all the information a plant needs to grow is inscribed in that tiny seed – or rather in the tiniest molecules of that seed.
Mind-blowing.
Each plant ‘knows’ how to pull the right nutrients it needs for the color and texture of its fruit. It ‘knows’ how to attract pollinators and how to position its leaves for the most beneficial sun exposure. Yes, it needs care, but if it’s planted in the right climate, it will grow in harmony with nature into a healthy plant that produces abundantly.
This same intelligence about growth and health is inscribed in our DNA. The thing is, most humans have forgotten how to access that intelligence. We have modified our food and lifestyles in ways that are often more harmful than nourishing. And we have developed technologies that, although amazing and helpful, also take us away from our humanity, the opportunities to connect with nature, and to remember where we came from.
Last week I came across an interesting recent study that connects Alzheimer’s with Circadian Rhythm – adding to the many that prove the point of how much our bodies are connected to nature.
Although I grew up in the heart of an old city, nature was a regular part of our lives. The science class in my fifth grade was about the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that our bodies need and where we get them from. I remember my mom quizzing me on it and me being impressed with how much she knew (often intuitively).

Last year, I took the Perfect Health course (based on a book by Deepak Chopra, MD) because I wanted to learn how to be more proactive about my own health and wellbeing, instead of only relying on my physician.
My teachers were all western-medicine trained physicians who recognized the benefits of integrating the ancient wisdom/knowledge of Ayurvedic lifestyle with modern-day science. (I was a bit intimidated by the word “Ayurveda” simply because I knew nothing about it. But, once I opened my mind, so much of it resonated with the common-sense wisdom of my parents and their parents.)
After I finished the course, I continued the certification training. I was so excited by what I was learning that I wanted to teach it to others.
Get outside this weekend.
Plant a few seeds (herbs do great in pots too, if you don’t have a garden).
Go to bed early and wake up with the sun.
Take a deep breath – inhale and exhale the gratitude of being naturally connected with nature.
Give thanks to the Creator, who is magnificent beyond our limited human understanding.
